Extension

Extension offers a deeper understanding of Jewish ethics, values and wisdom, and further connects students to Jewish learning in a way that is meaningful to them. Lessons run parallel to and build on weekly SRE lessons.

Extension incorporates STEM and STEAM approaches to provide experience-based learning that promotes curiosity and creates a vibrant, interactive classroom that foster a sense of Jewish pride in students.

Examples of the types of activities students take part in during Extension include:

  • Students learning about Jewish Legends (and a legend involving the moon) participate in a Science experiment where they learn how the moon shines;
  • when learning about Chanukah, students make their own light switch.

BJE requires its teachers to comply with the following:

o   Hold current WWC (Working with Children) certification;

o   Successfully complete a Child Protection online course through the Department of Education portal;

o   Successfully complete a Code of Conduct online course;

o   Before commencing teaching for BJE, they must complete a teaching professional development session. After this, they undertake a Practicum and are observed by senior BJE staff when teaching classes.  Only after successful completion of this process are teachers allowed to teach lessons unsupervised;

o   Only BJE-approved curricula and materials may be used in lessons. The curricula and materials are developed and approved by our professionally trained staff;

o   Allow periodic observation of classes by senior BJE staff to ensure standards continue to be met. As part of the process, teachers are asked to complete a self-reflection of their role as a teacher. This gives the teacher and BJE an opportunity to discuss any issues, and allows feedback to be provided about the lesson to be provided. All observation records are collected and signed by all parties and are kept in the teacher’s file held by BJE;

o   Teachers undertake ongoing professional development sessions provided by BJE; and

o   BJE also has a teacher mentor available to all our staff to work one-on-one with them and provide classroom support.
