Shnat Sherut" (meaning "year of service") is often abbreviated as "Shin-Shin" or “ShinShinim”, referring to courageous and dedicated Israeli volunteers who spend a year serving Jewish communities around the world.

What are ShinShinim?
ShinShinim — a Hebrew acronym for Shant Sherut (Year of Service) — are some of Israel’s brightest recent high school graduates who defer their army service for a year to serve as emissaries in Jewish communities around the world. These inspiring young volunteers teach, engage and bring the spirit and joy of Israeli culture to life through local events and immersive experiences for people of all ages.
Now in our second year of hosting ShinShinim, BJE—together with Mt Zion ELC— is proud to see the strong bonds our students have formed with these caring and responsible role models. The program has strengthened conversational Hebrew across our primary and high school students, sparking curiosity, confidence, and a deeper connection to the Israeli experience.
Meet Our Current ShinShinim
Uri Beery
Uri lives in Kibbutz Gan Shmuel near Hadera together with his family. He is the eldest of three siblings. He majors in computer science and music. Uri is a member and leader of the ‘Hashomer Hatza’ir’ youth movement and works to connect younger children with the older members of the kibbutz. Uri is passionate about music. He plays the drums, guitar and bass guitar and performs in music ensembles and bands. He also spends time playing football and basketball. Uri loves to teach about Israel’s diverse and beautiful nature parks, oftenhiking through the countryside to bring the landscape and its stories to life.

Liri Meir
Liri lives in Tel Aviv and is the eldest of 4 sisters. Although she was born in Israel, she has lived in the US for 7 years. Liri often accompanies her mother to work related events, where she is able to meet and engage with children and adults with physical disabilities. Liri is extremely passionate about her involvement in the Tzofim movement where she is a leader involved in training the next generation of youth leaders. Liri also spent a summer in New Jersey as a counsellor for pre-school aged children at a JCC Summer camp. Liri is looking forward to bridging the gap between the Sydney community and Israel.
